Congratulations Champions And Award Winners Of 2009

As the 2009 motor sport year comes to an end, it is time to honour our motor sport champions, series winners and CAMS award winners and look at some of the highlights in achievements for 2009.

Victoria’s Brett Hayward was crowned the Australian Hillclimb Champion for 2009 after his victory at the Penrite Australian Hillclimb Championship held at Bryant Park, Haunted Hills. Hayward, driving a Formula Libre of his own design and construction, was the outright winner ahead of Andrew Howell and Greg Ackland.

Fellow Victorian John Boothman claimed the 2009 Australian SuperSprint Championship title at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit in November in a Formula 3 car ahead of Scott Bingham from NSW in a Minetti Sports car and Western Australia’s Cos Sorgiovanni in a Pilbeam.

Jamie Whincup once again dominated in 2009 claiming back to back V8 Supercar Championships and wrapping up the 2009 title at the inaugural Sydney Telstra 500.

Joey Foster took out the Australian Drivers Championship with a remarkable effort at Sandown raceway in Melbourne. With James Winslow winning in 2008, it was the first time in Gold Star history that British drivers have won the title in consecutive years, the first time a Team BRM driver has won it in consecutive years and a remarkable result in a season that saw the remarkably evenly matched Foster and Tim Macrow win seven races each.

Nick Percat earned himself the Australian Formula Ford Championship and a string of achievements following an outstanding, history-making season. Now celebrated as one of the all time great open wheel drivers in Australian motor racing history Percat finished every race in 2009, clocking up 12 race wins, 3 pole positions and 20 podium finishes.

Australian NASCAR driver Marcos Ambrose was honoured by CAMS with the prestigious Sir Jack Brabham Award at the Sydney Telstra 500 in Sydney in December. CAMS President Andrew Papadopoulos presented the award to Ambrose for his outstanding achievement and success as an Australian motor sport competitor at the international level.
