On 19 November 2009, the motor sport community lost two of its valued and respected members. Victorians Gary Tierney, 60, and David Carra, 43, were killed in an accident at the Classic Adelaide tarmac rally when their 1974 Porsche 911RS skidded off the road and crashed into a tree on Special Stage 6.
Gary Tierney
Gary started rallying in the early days of Targa Tasmania where he raced a variety of cars. Throughout his rallying career, he drove a range of powerful cars and one of his favourite events was the Classic Adelaide.
Gary always competed for the fun and love of it and always demonstrated excellent sportsmanship. For Gary rallying was a family affair where his wife Louise would always be there to greet him at the finish line and his son Mark joined him as his co-driver for many years.
David Carra
David dedicated his life to his motor sport passion and was well respected in the rally community. In the early days, David joined the Monash Sporting Car Club and competed in a number of club-level events including rallies, sprints and motorkhanas.
David also worked as a mechanic for a number of high-level rally teams including Prodrive and Ralliart, which competed in the World Rally Championship and Asia Pacific Rally Championship.
David enjoyed competing in historic and classic rally events including the Alpine Rally and HRA events. More recently, David competed in numerous tarmac rallies such as the Classic Adelaide and Targa Tasmania, including one event with his brother Andrew.
CAMS extends its deepest sympathy to the families and friends of Gary and David. Their spirit and passion will never be forgotten within the motor sport family.
